DIY Wedding Makeup

December 31st, 2009

Happy blue moon and last day of the first decade of the 21st century!

Last week I was in NYC for Christmas and happened to do one of my favorite things: casually wander into the makeup department of Bloomingdales and get myself a free makeover :) . Usually I don’t end up buying anything through these makeovers, but this time I actually did – in a somewhat roundabout way.

The look that I got was from the Benefit Cosmetics line and to me, it looked perfect for bridal makeup. I should have taken a photo of myself all dolled up, but the look was a pink shimmery effect.  From memory, the products used included the following:

"Dear John" was used first as a moisturizing base. Since I have plenty of moisturizers, I didn't buy this one.

"That Gal" is a primer which I *love*. It brightens your face and I felt like it made me really radiate.

"Some Kind-a-Gorgeous" is a lightweight foundation available in both "pale" and "deep" shades. This was used over "That Gal".

Now, I am pretty sure they used this one on me. It's called "erase paste" and is a concealer available in 3 shades. Like all concealers, you apply it after the foundation. I already have concealer so I'm going to see how things look with the one I already have.

"Sugarbomb" is a blusher and it looks really great!

In addition to these, she also used eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss – I thought these products were ok, but no real standouts to what I already had at home.  Bloomingdales had a special deal on the Benefit Cosmetics line where if you spent $75 you would get a bonus pack which included mascara, eye shadow, erase paste, and a bunch of other things.  It’s the best deal on Benefit that I’ve seen, but I ended up getting it from Sephora since I had a Sephora giftcard to use up. Sephora also have a sample pack of most of these products for the bargain price of $10 (I think that sale ends this weekend, so be quick!).

If you or one of your bridesmaids are comfortable with putting makeup on (let’s face it, most of us girls do this every day!), then I recommend going to your favorite makeup counter and having a few different makeovers until you find what you want to use.  Pay attention to what the makeup artist does (especially in getting rid of bags under eyes and blemishes!), and then try doing it yourself at home.  Especially if you have a lot of bridesmaids, you will definitely save a lot of money by doing your makeup yourself.

Top Wedding Planning Books

As we come to the end of the year, I thought it would be fun to look up what some of the best selling wedding planning and organizing books were on Amazon.com for 2009.  Wedding books are really helpful for keeping you organized and provide tons of tricks and tips while you are planning your wedding. Here’s a list of a few of the top ones:

Ring Twisty Action

December 28th, 2009

I love my engagement ring, I think it’s gorgeous. But one complaint I have is that there’s this ring-twisty-action where the ring gets spun, especially when I’m in the shower. I wish that I could size the ring smaller and be done with it, but then it wouldn’t fit over my knuckle. I wondered if there was a solution so I went to Mervis where Scott got the engagement ring and wedding rings. There are several options that were presented to me:

  • Add sizing balls to the ring – Little balls (resisting crude joke here) get added to the inside of the ring. I read on forums that folks with bony fingers will find it painful but those folks who have some flesh will find discomfort for only a couple of days. This solution doesn’t work for me anyways because of my chunky knuckles. Here’s a thread from PriceScope about it (also where I got the photo below):

  • Horseshoe sizer – A spring the shape of a horseshoe is added to the inside of the ring. This solution would be ideal for me since it would go over a big knuckle and stay put on a skinny finger. However, someone at Mervis looked at my ring and said there wasn’t enough space for me to add a horseshoe sizer. If the ring size was bigger, I would be able to:

  • Tension bar – A ring guard or tension bar can be added to the inside:

  • There’s also an arthritis shank where the ring opens up over the knuckle and then you snap it back into place. I wouldn’t go for this option because I think about how the ring could break. Here’s a thread that talks about the ring guard and arthritis shank (where I also got the pictures from ).
  • Another option Mervis presented to me was the solder the engagement and wedding rings together. It would minimize the twisting but wouldn’t solve it.
  • The last option is to decrease the size of the diamond to make it less top-heavy. But I don’t want to do that. :O)

It’s a lot of options, most of them shared by Mervis and some I read  from forums. I’m leaning towards soldering but it’s so much commitment to do that (ironic, I know).

Have you experienced the same dilemma? What did you decide?

USB Drives as Our Wedding Favors

December 26th, 2009

Our USB Drive (aka jump drive or flash drive) Wedding Favors

In a previous post, I commented about the USB drive wedding favors from our wedding. Yes, very geeky but it represented us so well. It wasn’t cheap but it was something we really wanted to do. You’ll laugh because when we got married 4 years ago, the 64 MB drive was pretty awesome. These days, you can get 1 GB or 2 GB for the same price. We didn’t give these favors to everyone because we felt my parents generation may not appreciate the favor. So we had two favors and presented this one at the end of the night while everyone was on the dance floor. It was so well received and friends tell us they still use it today. I got our USB drives from Branders who sells promotional items that you can put your logo on. We put our names, wedding date, and the graphic that was used on our invitations. There are tons of vendors that are similar so you could shop around for price. Unfortunately we were pressed for time so we didn’t get to shop around too much before deciding on a vendor. The sales rep at Branders was helpful and even decided to do the same favor for his wedding!

If you’re looking for other favor ideas, check our categories to the right.

What was your wedding favor and where did you buy from?

Too bad this baker is in the UK because I would send friends to them. This cake topper is a cute thing to do if your wedding is during the Christmas season. haha. Merry Christmas!

A Pittsburgh Tradition….

December 23rd, 2009

Last week one of my Pittsburgh-native friends sent me an article from the New York Times titled, The Wedding? I’m Here for the Cookies, about the legendary cookie tables at Pittsburgh weddings. My friend didn’t even realize it was a Pittsburgh thing, she just thought it was the norm to have cookie tables at wedding receptions. However, reading further into the article, it’s actually a tradition unique to the area!

According to the New York Times article and confirmed by my Pittsburgh friends, moms, grandmas, and aunts all begin baking cookies weeks and weeks in advance.  They make a crazy amount of cookies from peanut butter blossoms to Italian wedding cookies to Pizzelles (I personally love these) all for the guests to enjoy. Usually, the cookies are placed on one big table which allows everyone to help themselves during the reception.   The trend lately is to have small containers, like Chinese take-out boxes, available for the guests to bring additional cookies home in, and can be used as favors.

Even though this is mainly a Pittsburgh tradition and would require a lot of preparation and work (or a great bakery contact), I think it’s a great idea for any wedding. Who wouldn’t want to bring home a few extra sweets?!

Wedding Invitation Trend: Lace

December 21st, 2009

Hi everyone! I hope you are all staying warm, but enjoying all the snow (if you’re in the DC area or further north!).  And if you got married in this area yesterday, I hope everything went ok – do people postpone their wedding if a blizzard hits?

Anyway, on a very un-Christmas and un-snow like theme, this week I want to share about a trend I’ve been seeing lately that I think is fabulous – lace! I’m seeing it a lot on invitations at the moment, and was recently asked by a potential client to design her wedding invitations with lace in them.  They will still have some changes to them (the colors and motif), but here’s a sneaky peak for you!

This is one of the prototypes - since i'm still playing around with colors and ribbon sizes, I haven't actually sewn the ribbon and lace together yet (hence why you see it all raggedy at the side). The camera isn't doing total justice to the invitation, but it's deep purple with orange. I'm also going to play with deep red and a paisley print.

The ring is from the jewelery making section at Michael's.

And for good measure, here’s some other lace inspired invitations for your inspiration:

I love this! I dont know where they got the lace from (I looked at my local fabric store but couldnt find it that wide), but I love the mixture of laces, ribbon, fonts, and paper in this one by Dionne Lashell.

This one also has letterpressed lace rather than real lace.

This handmade lace invitation is also beautiful - I love the criss cross effect with the thin ribbon.

This lace invitation also incorporates suede paper. I could only imagine how much that costs!

I’m off to NYC this week and am hoping to stop by M&J Trimmings to see what they have in the way of lace and ribbons – they quite possibly have one of the largest selections in the world, so if you’re needing trimmings and are in NYC, go check it out!

Are you using lace in your wedding? How will you be incorporating it? Link to pictures if you can!!

Free Wedding Make-up Application

December 18th, 2009

makeup

Some brides stress about make-up, and then some brides really don’t care. If you’re a bride who doesn’t care, you could find a friend who has a knack for applying make-up. If you find a willing friend, then keep in mind that wedding make-up is a little different than everyday application. Why? Because you’ll want to look your best for the photos, which you’ll keep forever!

Another option is to schedule an appointment with your favorite make-up counter. They do make-overs in hopes that you’ll buy something. You might end up buying alot of items, but be sure to buy at least the items they used on your lips. You’ll end up having to reapply anyways, so it’s important that you have a plan to touch-up after dinner (and maybe after kissing!).  I’ve had bride-friends who sent their bridesmaids to make-up counters, like Saks Fifth Avenue or Nordstrom’s, while the bride got her make-up done by their trusted (and expensive) make-up artist.

The Fear of the Orange

My sister is going to be in one of our friends wedding this July and she is super excited to be in it, but of course there’s a small catch. Our friend, the bride-to-be, has finally chosen the bridesmaid dress colors and they are……. pink and orange! Half the bridesmaids will be assigned to wear pink, and the other half will be assigned orange.  Now that might not sound that bad to you, but to my fashionista sister, the possibility of having to wear orange is her worst nightmare especially when there’s going to be tons of pictures taken of her! Of course my sister will ultimately wear either color, but her telling me this news got me thinking about choosing bridesmaid dresses, and how a bride should go about making her decision from a bridesmaid perspective.

First and foremost, I believe that it is ultimately the bride’s choice on what her bridesmaids wear, no matter what her pickiest bridesmaids say. However, I think it is important to take all of your bridesmaids into consideration.  Some things to consider are the price of the dresses, sizes available, style or cut of the dresses, fabrics, and the colors. Try to think about each one of your bridesmaids separately and picture each of them in the dresses that you’re considering. If they seem like they’ll work on all of the bridesmaids, then you’ve found the right dresses. If not, move on to different ones. Depending on the size of your bridal party and their level of maintenance, one great tip is to narrow your bridesmaid dress selections down to just a few and have your bridesmaids vote on them. That way the bridesmaids feel that they are a part of the process and will be more supportive of the dress selection.  Another possibility is to give your bridesmaids options. Set a few guidelines like the color or style from a specific store or line and let them pick out the dress.  That way they can choose the dress that best fits their personality. Most importantly, you want everyone to be happy and feel comfortable on your wedding day.  And as for my sister, I know she’ll look great in either color, but fingers crossed that she gets assigned pink:)

There are lots to think about when you shop for your wedding dress. As friends look for their own dress, I offer advise from my own experience. There are several things that I did before I even tried a dress on. Here is my advice to you if you’re starting out for the first time:

  1. Understand the different silhouettes, necklines, and price ranges. People will talk “wedding dress talk” to you so it’s easier if you understand what they’re talking about. Wedding Dress Creator lets you play around with dress styles.
  2. Look online a bit to see what strikes your fancy – If you’re motivated, bookmark or print out a couple of dresses to take with you when you go shopping. It’ll help the consultant who is helping you find a dress. Try weddingchannel.com or brides.com.
  3. Watch wedding shows, like Say Yes to the Dress – set your DVR to watch the new episodes so you can see other brides with your body shape and see what looks good on them.
  4. Check out bridal magazines – look through the bridal magazines at your local bookstore. There’s always articles and ads about what’s the latest fashion.
  5. I frequented Wedding Channel’s dress search and found it really helpful. I found a dress that I liked and then it told me what stores carried it. In the end, finding the store that carried that dress was quicker than trying to find the dress by going store to store.

Do you have any other pre-wedding-dress-shop tips? Did you do anything differently?
