I don’t know what I was thinking, but for some reason, I thought that you needed to get a blood test to get a marriage license. I just supposed it was so that they could prove you weren’t marrying your brother or sister. (Again, I don’t know what I was thinking. The county courthouse probably doesn’t have it in their budget to have a DNA lab in their marriage license department.) In a bit of unreliable internet searching, I have discovered that yes, some states require you to have blood test results with you to apply for a marriage license, and no, it isn’t to prove that you aren’t marrying your brother, but rather, to make sure you don’t have Syphilis. How romantic!?!
But, speaking about blood and such got me thinking about the importance of your health and knowing where you and your partner stand prior to getting married. I’m not saying you need to go get tested for rare tropical diseases so you can dodge a bullet if need be, but perhaps getting a physical and a blood test isn’t a bad idea. If you and your partner are going to support and look out for each other, it is probably best to know whether or not you need to look out for something in particular. Plus, as is generally the case with life, it is easier to take care of a loved one than it is to take care of yourself, so being armed with the right information about your loved one’s health and having him armed with the right information about yours will just make you both better. And that is romantic.
