Funding a Wedding: Don’t Use Credit, Use Creativity!

by Laura

The iDo Project was conceived through a combination of a number of factors: Alastair and I needed money to fund a wedding, my colleague and I could not find a decent iPhone case for our new work phones and I knit in my spare time.  Here’s 5 tips on how to think creatively to fund a wedding:

  1. Come up with an idea, product/service that is useful and/or functional
    – Your friends and family may buy things from you ‘for a good cause’ but strangers will probably need more reason than that
  2. Model your product/service around your particular interests/strengths
    – If it’s not interesting to you, it will be difficult to keep up the enthusiasm
  3. Consider the current trends
    – For us, The iDo Project was naturally aligned with the following current trends: sustainability, austerity, hand-made, 80s/90s fluorescent fashion, technology
  4. Build a brand around your product/service that communicates the purpose of what you are trying to do
    – We decided on The iDo Project – a project set up with loved ones, to make and sell hand-knit iPhone cases, with the sole intention of raising money for our wedding – and everything about The iDo Project reflects this message to reinforce it.
  5. Round up Family and Friends to help you
    – They naturally want to help and be involved in wedding plans; the likelihood is that they will not feel that it is a chore and will be impressed by your entrepreneurial gumption. So don’t be afraid to ask them for help – you’ll be busy enough with this project and normal wedding preparations – you’ll need them!

Laura models one of the many options for iPhone cases that you can purchase in support of her wedding. What a creative idea!
