After getting engaged, my fiancé and I decided to revel in our new happiness for at least a month. That meant no absolutely no thinking about wedding planning. I kind of enjoyed the time to just enjoy being engaged because I knew the next year of my life was going to be a whirlwind.
After the month of bliss was over, it was time to get planning! The first thing I did was buy a Moleskin notebook. I separated the notebook with tabs, into 4 sections; “to do lists”, “vendors”, “budget” and “inspiration”. This was going to be my wedding bible for the next year. All things wedding are in this book. If I found a scrap of paper that I thought was the perfect shade of ivory, in the book it went! This book is always within reach.
I was never one of those girls, who had fantasized about every detail of my wedding. The first thing to research was what style wedding I wanted. After looking through a few wedding websites and magazines, I noticed there were four types of wedding styles:
1. Modern: The look is clean and sleek. This bride is minimalist but with a soft edge.

- Vera Wang “Evelyn” wedding dress
- Calla lilly centerpiece. Picture by Felicia Perry.
- Cake from The Knot
- Pierre Hardy shoes
- Urban Outfitters “Druzy rock ring”
- Invitation by Minted.com
2. Vintage/Rustic: This bride is romantic with a nod to vintage themes and DIY crafts.

- Sarah Seven “Ivory Bliss” wedding dress
- Dolly Pearl “Lundy” dress
- Gorgeous photo by Elizabeth Messina

- Cake by Magpie
- Bra by Philip Lim
3. Destination: The beach wedding, probably the most popular location. The location speaks for itself.

- J.Crew “Arabelle” gown
- Kate Spade “Hula Too” sandals
- J. Crew “Arabelle” dress
- Lanvin coral necklace

4. Traditional: A wedding fit for a princess. This bride relies on traditions to create a picture perfect wedding.

- White by Vera Wang at David’s Bridal
- Sylvia Weinstock cake
- Valentino shoes

- Tiffanys ring

In the end, I decided I would attempt to channel my inner Martha Stewart and my love of making crafts and go with a vintage/rustic wedding.

Moleskine Notebooks ROCK! I use it mainly for not taking, designing and ideating for Big Fat Cake. On a separate note, I never thought about it, but taking the month to just enjoy your engagement was a wise idea. I think often times, couples get so caught up in the moment of the wedding – one is thinking “oh gosh, this is going to be expensive,” and the other is thinking “when, where, what, and how.” Good on you guys for enjoying your engagement, not that the year of planning won’t be joyful as well – it’ll be fun!
