Wedding Lessons – Part 2

CHECK THE CUFFS

J and I wanted to provide the groomsmen with dress shirts. Finding their sizes in the same model proved more difficult than imagined. We went to Macy’s and eventually found 4 white shirts of the same designer, fit and in the sizes we needed. We planned on having them ironed in North Carolina, so we didn’t check the shirts individually or have the groomsmen try them on. We had some trouble finding a cleaner that could have the shirts ironed within 48 hours, but we were able to find one and placed the shirts in the hotel suite that the groomsmen and I were staying at. On the day of the wedding, the shirts were distributed and we discovered that half the shirts had french cuffs (requiring cufflinks). The groomsmen used paperclips and no one was the wiser due to their suit jackets.

NEVER SAY NEVER

I never broke a bone, until 2 weeks before the wedding when I broke 2 ribs. I never lost a suit until I couldn’t find it after the rehearsal dinner. I never had a flat tire while driving until I was driving myself and two groomsmen out to my parents’ in laws house as a last ditch effort to find the suit. Who knew all these unforeseen events would cause me to return to the hotel (luckily with the suit and other luggage) after 3am and change the agenda for the morning before the wedding? Anything could happen so, never travel alone and have an emergency kit in the car.

SURPRISE YOURSELVES

J and I planned along the lines of me saying, “It would be cool to…”, and J guiding my ideas into reality. One idea was that it would be awesome to light paper lanterns into the sky like in the animated film, “Tangled”. J said, “That’s a cartoon, does that even exist?” But later on, she found Wish Lanterns which were exactly like that (only larger). We ordered one, but never tested it. We decided to take a chance and order them. During our reception, we took a break from dancing and went out to the bonfire. We distributed the Wish Lanterns and instructed people on what to do, with no expectations. We were all surprised and delighted when the flat paper lantern began expanding and glowing before people released them and watched them float into the air. Eventually, all 25 lanterns were released and, though they had all been released in different directions, they began following a path once they reached a certain altitude. It was an awesome sight to see 25 lights traveling in a line. It was something we hadn’t known to expect.
