VW- Spring 2010 Collection

February 18th, 2010

I am loving the Vera Wang Spring 2010 bridesmaids dresses. The airy tissue organza, the ruffled layers and sashes, and the crinkled chiffon make this collection one of my absolute favorites. I would have posted all of the dresses if I could, but here are some of my favorite styles and colors from the website:

Bridesmaid Dress Embellishments

February 3rd, 2010

One trend I’ve noticed this year is having embellishments added to bridesmaid dresses. Whether it’s an extra flower added to the back of the dress, a small broach pinned to the neckline, or different colored sashes wrapped around the waist, embellishments can add that little finishing touch for each bridesmaid.  The possibilities are endless and allow the bride and bridesmaids to personalize the bridesmaid dresses in a unique way.

Are you planning on adding embellishments to your bridesmaid dresses?

Bridesmaid Baby Bumps

January 13th, 2010

A few of my recently married friends have started to have the “baby talk” and as more and more of my friends are getting engaged and starting to plan their weddings, the possibility of being a pregnant bridesmaid has come up in conversation a couple of times. It’s tough because no one wants to be that bridesmaid with a baby bump, but at the same time why should someone put off starting a family or adding to their family because they’re going to be in a wedding or two this year? If you are a bridesmaid that might be pregnant on the day of the wedding, just be honest with the bride and give her as much notice in advance as possible. That way the bride and the rest of the bridal party can plan accordingly for the bridesmaid dresses, shoes, accessories, etc. The bridesmaid dresses are especially a major concern if a bridesmaid is going to be pregnant at the wedding. Luckily, there are a lot of options as more and more designers are creating maternity dress lines. One bridesmaid that I know is going to be almost 8 months pregnant at her sister’s wedding in the spring and the bride was able to select dresses for the bridal party that offered a few maternity options. Granted, you can’t always plan for the future, but if you know or have an inkling that a bridesmaid might be pregnant at the wedding here are a few gorgeous maternity bridesmaid dresses that I came across from simpledress.com to consider:

The Fear of the Orange

My sister is going to be in one of our friends wedding this July and she is super excited to be in it, but of course there’s a small catch. Our friend, the bride-to-be, has finally chosen the bridesmaid dress colors and they are……. pink and orange! Half the bridesmaids will be assigned to wear pink, and the other half will be assigned orange.  Now that might not sound that bad to you, but to my fashionista sister, the possibility of having to wear orange is her worst nightmare especially when there’s going to be tons of pictures taken of her! Of course my sister will ultimately wear either color, but her telling me this news got me thinking about choosing bridesmaid dresses, and how a bride should go about making her decision from a bridesmaid perspective.

First and foremost, I believe that it is ultimately the bride’s choice on what her bridesmaids wear, no matter what her pickiest bridesmaids say. However, I think it is important to take all of your bridesmaids into consideration.  Some things to consider are the price of the dresses, sizes available, style or cut of the dresses, fabrics, and the colors. Try to think about each one of your bridesmaids separately and picture each of them in the dresses that you’re considering. If they seem like they’ll work on all of the bridesmaids, then you’ve found the right dresses. If not, move on to different ones. Depending on the size of your bridal party and their level of maintenance, one great tip is to narrow your bridesmaid dress selections down to just a few and have your bridesmaids vote on them. That way the bridesmaids feel that they are a part of the process and will be more supportive of the dress selection.  Another possibility is to give your bridesmaids options. Set a few guidelines like the color or style from a specific store or line and let them pick out the dress.  That way they can choose the dress that best fits their personality. Most importantly, you want everyone to be happy and feel comfortable on your wedding day.  And as for my sister, I know she’ll look great in either color, but fingers crossed that she gets assigned pink:)

There are lots to think about when you shop for your wedding dress. As friends look for their own dress, I offer advise from my own experience. There are several things that I did before I even tried a dress on. Here is my advice to you if you’re starting out for the first time:

  1. Understand the different silhouettes, necklines, and price ranges. People will talk “wedding dress talk” to you so it’s easier if you understand what they’re talking about. Wedding Dress Creator lets you play around with dress styles.
  2. Look online a bit to see what strikes your fancy – If you’re motivated, bookmark or print out a couple of dresses to take with you when you go shopping. It’ll help the consultant who is helping you find a dress. Try weddingchannel.com or brides.com.
  3. Watch wedding shows, like Say Yes to the Dress – set your DVR to watch the new episodes so you can see other brides with your body shape and see what looks good on them.
  4. Check out bridal magazines – look through the bridal magazines at your local bookstore. There’s always articles and ads about what’s the latest fashion.
  5. I frequented Wedding Channel’s dress search and found it really helpful. I found a dress that I liked and then it told me what stores carried it. In the end, finding the store that carried that dress was quicker than trying to find the dress by going store to store.

Do you have any other pre-wedding-dress-shop tips? Did you do anything differently?

The Other Wedding Gown

November 8th, 2009

If you are Chinese or marrying into a Chinese family, this question must have come across some time during the planning process… Are you going to wear a qipao? It’s always a nice gesture to the grandparents and parents to incorporate a bit of your or your fiance’s culture into the wedding. Although the qipao is not the traditional Chinese bridal gown, it is a good modern-day alternative.

So where can you get one? Here are a few places to look:

1. Chinese wedding photo studios such as True Love Wedding (based in New York): these places provide packages that can include all or an a la carte of these services: photographer, videographer, limosine, hair/makeup, and dress rentals. The bride goes in a couple of weeks before the wedding day and pick out the dress.

2. Your mother’s closet…Or your future mother-in-law’s or even your aunties. I’m pretty sure they wore one of these form fitting beauties on their wedding day. Wouldn’t it be amazing to wear the same dress your mother wore 30 or so years ago?

3. Custom tailor shop. I have to admit, those are a bit scarce in the US. You can do some scouting at the Chinatown in your metropolitan area or pay a visit to Asia.  Lai’s Royal Tailoring (based in New York) has been making qipao’s for over thirty years.

Luckily for me, my parents were taking a vacation to Asia several months before my wedding.  They took my dimensions and got two dresses custom made for me in China.

Did you or are you going to wear a qipao on your wedding day? Where did you get your qipao?

We have had a lot of discussion on the BFC blog about bridesmaids and gifts etc but I thought I would share a few gift ideas for the groomsmen.  Now most grooms I know were pretty excited about purchasing gifts for their friends and since these gifts are another way of thanking them a little thought and effort can go a long way.   Here are a few good ideas I have come across lately.

Bobbleheads

A friend of mine’s husband sent in photos of his groomsmen to this company and at the rehearsal dinner he presented each with a their own personalized bobblehead.  I thought this was a cute idea and it definitely fit the personality of the groom!  I found a few websites online that will personalizes them for your special occasion http://www.whoopassenterprises.com

Scotch and Cigars. There is nothing like a group of guys with a bottle of scotch and cigars.  A nice bottle of scotch and nice cigar will always be appreciated but be careful with the timing of these gifts.  Some groomsmen might crack open the bottle the night of the rehearsal so beware of the potential of a hungover groomsmen.  These gifts can be bought at any local liquor or cigar store.

Personalized Poker Set (http://www.casinogift.com)

This is a great gift for the poker loving guys.  I think this would have a been a great idea for our groomsmen but remember that anything personalized will need to be purchased far in advance.

Clothing Accessories (http://mallimages.mallfinder.com)

Although these gifts seem to be traditional, every guy will undoubtedly love to have an extra pair of cufflinks or even a really nice tie on hand!   I personally love Thomas pink ties and they can be a great gift and can also be worn during a casual wedding!

What are you thinking of giving as groomsmen gifts for your wedding? Have you come across any non traditional gift ideas that you loved?

Deciding on the Right Veil

November 4th, 2009

One of my friends who is in the midst of planning her wedding came to me last week about deciding on a veil to go with her dress. Initially she didn’t want one, or at least didn’t want to spend too much money on one because she’d only be wearing it for the ceremony and pictures, but decided to see what options were out there. During her search she came across a great website www.wedding-veil.com. Having doubts about getting a veil, the site allowed my friend to order a number of veil swatches at no cost AND free shipping. She was really pleased with the quality of the samples from the site and was able to decide on the perfect veil to go with her dress while staying within her budget!

(My friend decided on a veil similar to this one. It’s floor length and dramatic- and to think she didn’t even want a veil!)

(I love this visor veil and it’s a great deal for only $40!)

I’ve noticed a lot of my friends having a wide variety of veils on their wedding day. I’ve seen visor veils, to floor length, to even one with feathers. I also know a few brides who chose not to wear a veil at all. It completely depends on your style and preference. When shopping for your wedding dress, almost every bridal boutique will be able to pair a veil with your dress. Trying on a number of veils in a number of different styles will help you decide which looks best on you and with the dress. That way, if you do go the Internet route, you’ll have a better idea of the style that you want. Here are a few tips that my friend gave me when ordering veils online:

  • See if the site offers swatches of veils before ordering the actual veil- that way you have a better idea of what it will look like and will be happier with your choice
  • Make sure the color of your veil matches the color your dress as close as possible- if the colors are a little different go with a lighter colored veil
  • Match the style of the veil to the style of the dress- if your dress is quite simple, steer clear of really ornate veils or if the dress has a lot of embellishments try and accentuate those details in the veil as well

Do you plan on wearing a veil on your wedding day? If so, what style do you think you’ll choose?
