DIY Wedding Makeup

December 31st, 2009

Happy blue moon and last day of the first decade of the 21st century!

Last week I was in NYC for Christmas and happened to do one of my favorite things: casually wander into the makeup department of Bloomingdales and get myself a free makeover :) . Usually I don’t end up buying anything through these makeovers, but this time I actually did – in a somewhat roundabout way.

The look that I got was from the Benefit Cosmetics line and to me, it looked perfect for bridal makeup. I should have taken a photo of myself all dolled up, but the look was a pink shimmery effect.  From memory, the products used included the following:

"Dear John" was used first as a moisturizing base. Since I have plenty of moisturizers, I didn't buy this one.

"That Gal" is a primer which I *love*. It brightens your face and I felt like it made me really radiate.

"Some Kind-a-Gorgeous" is a lightweight foundation available in both "pale" and "deep" shades. This was used over "That Gal".

Now, I am pretty sure they used this one on me. It's called "erase paste" and is a concealer available in 3 shades. Like all concealers, you apply it after the foundation. I already have concealer so I'm going to see how things look with the one I already have.

"Sugarbomb" is a blusher and it looks really great!

In addition to these, she also used eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss – I thought these products were ok, but no real standouts to what I already had at home.  Bloomingdales had a special deal on the Benefit Cosmetics line where if you spent $75 you would get a bonus pack which included mascara, eye shadow, erase paste, and a bunch of other things.  It’s the best deal on Benefit that I’ve seen, but I ended up getting it from Sephora since I had a Sephora giftcard to use up. Sephora also have a sample pack of most of these products for the bargain price of $10 (I think that sale ends this weekend, so be quick!).

If you or one of your bridesmaids are comfortable with putting makeup on (let’s face it, most of us girls do this every day!), then I recommend going to your favorite makeup counter and having a few different makeovers until you find what you want to use.  Pay attention to what the makeup artist does (especially in getting rid of bags under eyes and blemishes!), and then try doing it yourself at home.  Especially if you have a lot of bridesmaids, you will definitely save a lot of money by doing your makeup yourself.

Free Wedding Make-up Application

December 18th, 2009

makeup

Some brides stress about make-up, and then some brides really don’t care. If you’re a bride who doesn’t care, you could find a friend who has a knack for applying make-up. If you find a willing friend, then keep in mind that wedding make-up is a little different than everyday application. Why? Because you’ll want to look your best for the photos, which you’ll keep forever!

Another option is to schedule an appointment with your favorite make-up counter. They do make-overs in hopes that you’ll buy something. You might end up buying alot of items, but be sure to buy at least the items they used on your lips. You’ll end up having to reapply anyways, so it’s important that you have a plan to touch-up after dinner (and maybe after kissing!).  I’ve had bride-friends who sent their bridesmaids to make-up counters, like Saks Fifth Avenue or Nordstrom’s, while the bride got her make-up done by their trusted (and expensive) make-up artist.

Deciding on the Right Veil

November 4th, 2009

One of my friends who is in the midst of planning her wedding came to me last week about deciding on a veil to go with her dress. Initially she didn’t want one, or at least didn’t want to spend too much money on one because she’d only be wearing it for the ceremony and pictures, but decided to see what options were out there. During her search she came across a great website www.wedding-veil.com. Having doubts about getting a veil, the site allowed my friend to order a number of veil swatches at no cost AND free shipping. She was really pleased with the quality of the samples from the site and was able to decide on the perfect veil to go with her dress while staying within her budget!

(My friend decided on a veil similar to this one. It’s floor length and dramatic- and to think she didn’t even want a veil!)

(I love this visor veil and it’s a great deal for only $40!)

I’ve noticed a lot of my friends having a wide variety of veils on their wedding day. I’ve seen visor veils, to floor length, to even one with feathers. I also know a few brides who chose not to wear a veil at all. It completely depends on your style and preference. When shopping for your wedding dress, almost every bridal boutique will be able to pair a veil with your dress. Trying on a number of veils in a number of different styles will help you decide which looks best on you and with the dress. That way, if you do go the Internet route, you’ll have a better idea of the style that you want. Here are a few tips that my friend gave me when ordering veils online:

  • See if the site offers swatches of veils before ordering the actual veil- that way you have a better idea of what it will look like and will be happier with your choice
  • Make sure the color of your veil matches the color your dress as close as possible- if the colors are a little different go with a lighter colored veil
  • Match the style of the veil to the style of the dress- if your dress is quite simple, steer clear of really ornate veils or if the dress has a lot of embellishments try and accentuate those details in the veil as well

Do you plan on wearing a veil on your wedding day? If so, what style do you think you’ll choose?

Surviving the Big Day

October 21st, 2009

One thing that is for certain on the day of your wedding is that you can’t plan for the unexpected. However, you can do your best to try! That’s why I think having a bride or bridesmaid ‘survival kit’ is critical for the big day. Having a nail file if someone breaks a nail, or a sewing kit if a button pops off a dress, or some bobby pins in case a piece of hair falls out of place can help make the day go a lot smoother.  You can buy them pre-made or make them yourself. They make great gifts for the bridesmaids or bride. I got one of my friends a bride survival kit as an additional gift for her bridal shower. I also know a maid of honor who made a big basket with a bunch of day of essentials that the bride and bridesmaids all shared while they were getting ready together.

Some of the essentials I think should be in a wedding survival kit include:

-Sewing Kit                                                         -Safety Pins                                                         -Bobby Pins

-Band-Aids                                                          -Shout Wipes or Tide Pens                           -Travel Deodorant

-Breath mints                                                     -Tissues                                                                -Hairspray

- Nail Files                                                            -Clear Nail Polish                                              -Pain Reliever

Hair Flowers

September 30th, 2009

One trend I’ve noticed a lot lately at weddings is brides having flowers incorporated into their wedding day hair styles. I’ve seen friends use fresh and also silk flowers. If you use fresh flowers just make sure that they are sturdy enough to last throughout the day (check with your florist for advice on which type to choose). If you use silk flowers you can easily attach them with pins or find them already attached to alligator clips, combs, elastic bands and barrettes. Flowers in your hair are an easy way to add a pop of color or an element of sophistication. Check out a few ways my friends styled their hair with flowers.

Danielle used a pop of pink to match with her pink themed wedding.

Wedding Day Hair Worries

August 27th, 2009

Another popular topic with my girlfriends lately is wedding day hair and the lack of good photos online.   I haven’t been able to determine if there is maybe too many hair photos online or not enough since the majority of them are nothing even close to what I’m looking for my wedding day.   Although throughout my search I have noticed that I have had better luck finding hair I like on real brides as opposed to the professional hair galleries on many of the wedding websites!

Now this may come as quite a shock but I have actually never had my hair done before and kept it.  I had my hair done once for prom and I took it out as soon as I left since I hated it!   I have a very simple strapless, satin trumpet gown.  I have decided that since I can’t predict how my hair will want to act after an afternoon ceremony in the sun (hopefully) and lot’s of pictures and dancing that I will minimize the risk and put it all up.  Since I never like the way a hairstylists styles my hair when I leave the salon, I have decided to have a trial updo.   Does anyone have any tips they could offer when going to this?

Here are few I’m considering.

Has anyone had an experience with their own wedding hairstyle that they wish they had done differently?  Is anyone considering doing their own wedding day hair?

So most us by now have watched an episode of “Say Yes to the Dress” or watched Bride Wars and many other shows where the dress practically “picked” the bride.  I would have loved if this happened to me, but the reality is, I know myself and many other brides come to the decision that we just “need a dress”. At some point you are trying on dresses waiting for this moment to hit you and then at some point you realize you might not ever have that moment.  I love wedding gowns and I really liked quite a few of the ones I had on.

Here are some tips to finding the gown (if it hasn’t found you yet)

  1. Pick a style that you want and stick to it! Don’t be lured by other beautiful dresses.
  2. Shop around and try on lots of dresses!  (Of course apologize to the consultant for trying on any excessive amounts of dresses and always remember to be polite)
  3. Stick with your budget!  Try not to shop out of your price range. A dress that you love does exist for whatever it is!!  A good consultant will help you and if they can’t – shop around!
  4. Your opinion is the only one that matters!  Definitely bring your MOH or mother but in the end pick what you want, not what they want you to try on!
  5. Set a Decision Day! Set a date when you would like to have your dress by and stick to it.

I found myself on my D-Day in a bridal store down the street from work while I was away on travel.  With two dresses in hand, I told the consultant to give me 15 minutes and I’m coming out with a decision.  (I tried them on a million more times and examined of course ever inch of the dress).

As a result I’m thrilled with my dress!  I love it and well it’s like getting married – don’t tempt yourself anymore by looking!

Here are some real brides whose dresses didn’t pick them!

Different Hair Styles

I’ve been debating for some time now how to wear my hair for the wedding.  It’s a garden wedding, which is a bit more romantic— some have suggested wearing it down with waves or curls.  At the same time I am a bit more traditional and considering for a up hair-do.  Unfortunately, the stylist that is doing my hair does not do trial runs.  I will have to know exactly what I want, how I want it that day.  My game plan is to bring as many photographs as possible.

What I know for sure is that I will need some sort of accessory.  I feel like a little girl because I want everything— headband, flower, veil, crystals.  It doesn’t end.  But I know I can NOT wear ALL those things in my hair for the wedding.

As for headbands,  I had my eyes on Jennifer Behr. Here is one I really love:

petite crystal and satin headwrap

What I found to be a very popular trend lately is to wear a flower (whether handmade flower or real flower).  The single flower is definitely what I’m leaning towards.  However, the more difficult decision now is feather flower, silk flower or real flower.  I just love Renee Pawele’s and Sara Gabriel’s collections.

There are so many different choices for brides these days.  From tiaras to birdcage veils.  Although, I’m not considering a tiara, I can still look.  Here is one I love from Toni Federici.

For now the decision is still not made.  I guess everyone will have to wait for the big day to find out!
